BARCELONA is a story about the enduring power of love, inspiration and art – and the family ties that bind them.
Book and lyrics by Christine Toy Johnson, Music and lyrics by Jason Ma.
When the death of her sister sends an American novelist into a downward spiral, it seems her creative spirit may be gone for good. That is, until a mysterious dream revives her with a jolt – and an inexplicable desire to visit Barcelona. In a city shining with architecture, music, and romance, time gets unlocked and stories merge as the spirit of her sister leads her on an extraordinary journey of healing and forgiveness.
Setting: NYC, Barcelona, Spain and the Catalan Seaside.
Time: 1879, 1926, 2015, and the space in between.
BARCELONA was developed in part at a retreat at the Weston Playhouse Theatre Company in Weston, Vermont. The writers were awarded a 2013-2014 artists' residency at CAP21, where they were given space, time and institutional support to continue working on the piece.
In 2013 excerpts from BARCELONA were performed in the SIgnature Theater Center's Griffin Theater as a part of the Asian American Composers and Lyricists Project inaugural concert. Later, a one act musical of excerpts from the full score and libretto was retitled ANTONI & AN WEI and performed in concert as a part of the National Asian Artists Project's "Discover: New Musicals" series.
In a generous gesture of support, CAP21 produced an industry presentation with a full cast on October 2nd, 2014. The first public outing for the completed libretto and score, a significant first step.

OCTOBER 2, 2014
29 Hour Reading
An industry invited presentation produced by CAP 21 and performed in their theater.
We finished recording a demo album of the major songs in the score, and have been blessed with the talents of some amazing singers -
Ali Ewoldt (PHANTOM OF THE OPERA on Broadway), Jaygee Macapugay (SCHOOL OF ROCK on Broadway), Manu Narayan (BOMBAY DREAMS on Broadway), Diane Phelan (THE KING AND I at Lincoln Center) and Chris Vasquez (internationally acclaimed, award winning tango singer).
Another completed milestone in our journey - BARCELONA was one of five pieces selected by Village Theatre in Issaquah, Washington to be performed as a staged reading on their mainstage in August as a part of their 2015 Festival of New Musicals. We had the good fortune to work with some wonderful theater artists, and it was beautifully directed by Cara Reichel, producing artistic director of Prospect Theater Company.
